I came to pottery late in life and have suddenly found myself very much at ease with what I am doing. However, some aspects of my personality remain the same. At one stage in my life, I used to thatch roofs, and when I came off a roof, once completed, I was full of all the difficulties the roof had presented. Perhaps a curve was not exactly as I had envisaged or I had had to compromise the eave line due to a structural obstacle. I hated the roof and was completely embroiled in the difficulties.

And then, perhaps six months later, I would unintentionally drive past and think – oh my god – that is beautiful, I cannot believe that I did that. It was such an overwhelming feeling. It’s the same with my  pots. After I have completed a piece, I need to be away from it for a while in order to be able to even begin to relate to it sensibly.

Each of my pots are handcrafted by me from start to finish. I make my own glazes and slips for decoration and am constantly experimenting with new ideas which at the present time is leading me to work with natural glazes using wood ash, plant materials and local rocks. My latest collection of pots, in this style, although not yet ready, will be available soon on my website.
